Just wondering. The shark did not look spooked at all. I would have thought it would have run for its life not stayed around to be eaten. Could it have been injured or deliberately incapacitated for the video?.
Just asking as it seems strange the shark did not head for the hills when the Orca pod arrived.
Unless Orcas do not normally eat sharks and they were just playing a bit rough and took the shark by surprise.

Didnt watch the vid, but seen them do it to whites. Dont they go for the livers? Very precise in how they do it, Im sure one doco even mentioned they shared it in a sense socially amongst the pod.

I saw a video of orca chasing whales, they would chase them until they separated the calf from its mother and then drown the calf by stopping them come up for air. Then eat the tongue from the calf and leave. Very savage creature

the Orcas in NZ eat Stingrays and sharks, they love the young Thrashers, Ingrid has filmed them catching and eating them, they tend to head butt the sharks first which would make them look incapacitated before ripping it to bits...

Thanks for posting that. Looking at the way the shark has it's mouth open all the time I'd say it's already very tired from being chased for ............. quite a while.
Shark looked big next to the boat but tiny next to the Orca.

Lethal - I think it was Ingrid I saw on a documentary about whales on tv. She shared some very interesting info and footage of killer whales, was a great watch.

yes they may kill quite a few smallish sharks infact,
report and Photo by Ingrid Visser
This mako shark, one of the most feared creatures of the sea, became the target of two orcas in an underwater encounter that saw the shark come off second best.

In the Bay of Islands in 1998, an orca made a ferocious attack on a mako shark. Held by the tip of the tail, the shark tried to escape. It broke free to ‘hide’ under a boat, but the orca pursued it, bit it around the girth, and descended with the shark in its mouth, regrasping it near the tail. A second orca joined in the attack, biting the shark on the head, and together the two descended while eating their doomed victim.

haha here is another,
This 18-tonne Bryde’s whale was found floating in the Hauraki Gulf in August 2004. It had been attacked and killed by a pod of orcas which tore out and ate its huge tongue, an orca delicacy. Fatty flesh along its back had also been eaten. Note the orca toothmarks in the centre of the photo.

Orcas are sometimes called the wolves of the sea because of their tendency to hunt as a pack, as seen here. In one attack witnessed off Kaikōura Peninsula, a large female orca led the pack by launching herself into a group of dusky dolphins. The duskies panicked and scattered, allowing the other orcas to pick them off individually.

Steve Hathaway has been doing a fair bit of work with Ingrid Visser and was the first to witness (and film) orca eating stingrays.  (check out www.stevehathaway.com)  He has also been working with his daughter Riley to produce "Young Ocean Exploers" which has featured on What Now (sunday mornings) and has also been picked up by Air NZ for inclusion in its' inflight entertainment pack.

IMO this is a great initiative.

There has been times where I have seen a really good run of kingies on one particular spot, then you turn up and find some orcas on the spot. Funny thing is the good king bite stops right then, guessing they don't mind a feed of kingfish, or possibly chasing the sharks that are feeding on the kings

I was right about them being known to kill white pointers and eating only the liver. Seems more picky than some snapper fisherman ;-p
