Friday after work Grant, Mike and myself loaded Grants mighty Extreme 6.1 full of gear put out kids to bead and headed out of the Tron and aimed for the Ocean.

We crossed the Bowentown bar at 10.00pm and set a course for Mayor Island.  We were on a mission to catch creatures from the Deep and the Bravo was high.

After a flat as cruise out we set up our first drift and proceeded to catch nothing.  Mike claimed to be suffering from fatigue as his young girls were sick and were waking up at 2am for the last week and climbed into a sleeping bag for a sleep.  Grant and I were not so soft and set up a Second drift.

And caught Nothing.

A change of pins to the 290 and bombs away and Grant caught a perch.  A big perch but still just a perch.

2AM came and still nothing.

We cruised into Mayor Tired and Exhausted and went to sleep.

We woke as the sky got light Grant scooped up a Koheroa with the fastest landing net action in the Pacific. and we headed our to a spot i had entered into the GPS back in Hamilton as my Maybe Spot.

Any ways first drift and Grant Hooks up.  A bit of buzzing from his electric reel and up comes a nice 7.5kg Hapuka.  Yes we are on the board.  Conditions had now gone from flat to mill pond so we moved back and reset the dift all of 100m.  We dropped away again this time we made Grant fish 2 rods just so re remembered what winding up 350 felt like. Any ways he proceeded to catch 1 fish on each rod.  Both small Bass of about 5 and 8kg.

After a few more drifts i caught 3 Bass in the 8 to 10KG range and Mike lost his drooer rig on the bottom.  Luck for him his knots are crap and he still had all his braid.  We set about reminding Mike he is aloud to catch fish too.

With this he ties on a 500g diamond eye and adds a butterflied mackerel onto the hook and sends if to the bottom. About 2min into the drift Mike is muttering something about hooking the bottom again cranks up the drag on his new Makira 15ii then all hell brakes loose.  The fish takes off the reel slides out of the gimbal belt Mike is nearly pulled out of the boat and line is peeling of the reel at a great rate.  Grant and I grab Mike help him sort the rod and the fight is on.  30min later up pops a bigger Bass.  The digital scales on the boat showed 32kg on the nose.  With the chilli bin now filled we headed for Home at 10.30am.

Unfortunately in the mayhem we forgot to turn on the video camera but we took a few stills as below.
Also we have entered the Tauranga Sport Fishing Clubs Albicore and Wreck fish comp for the last 2 years and it had been cancelled both times, this year we did not bother to enter and it was on this weekend.  I have been too scared to look at the results but we probably could have done OK. Ouch

Nice! Great humour and a great fish for sure. It would have won easy Big smile. If you posted up a pic of the perch then yes your bass would have looked even bigger!
