Wouldn't trust those ones. Theyre just the same old ones that a computer has added some extra lines to.

on the East Coast Alex they show unmarked foul which is not shown on any map other than the NIWA 3D map but admittedly there are still the odd ones still hidden,
so i would at least try it first you may find the odd place to catch a Broadie.
what are you using Alex?

Ok that's interesting. I haven't noticed a single difference between the standard charts and the "sonar" charts. Maybe they have been updated since I gave up on them.
I use the Navionics for a reference but out deep we find it pretty average.... Have to rely on the sounder and hope it decides it wants to work on the day... Also take the co-ords or the Koordinates sites and mark on the navionics.

With you 100% on that call mate. sonar charts are supposed to be crowd sourced data but the blanks have been filled in by some computer algorithm. Some promising looking area north of the Mokes that is shown on sonar charts is just not there... I guess the original spot soundings were incorrect and now sonar charts fills in the blanks and creates some quite misleading contour maps. Turn off sonar charts and that navionics webapp is all good. Thumbs Up

3D,
i am finding it hard to understand why our Government departments arn't selling these maps to the public, or at least to the Navionics industry,
they certainly have done the soundings, there is the odd site you can view them from not that i am going to put them up here,
but you would think it cost an arm and a leg to do the mapping they would by now be trying to recoup some sort of return from it...
these charts cover a lot of ground admittedly not supper close to shore as of yet, but they have every rock reef canyon that was never on a map before,
3D is certainly the way ahead even when just presented flat with shadows it has the potential to show way more than what we have now.
here is section in the BOI norwest of the Brett some will notice it right off, but look at the detail and its still not fully zoomed in...

Is that the NIWA 3d mapping that they have done Eric. Is it open to the public?

yeah Gowest, some councils are using it for dumping dredging's which i think is a great idea, makes sure they are not releasing that sludge onto decent fishing grounds,
they have quite a few other activities on the charts as well.
but long term why they are not making it available to us which i would have thought would help cover the cost of the Navy doing it in the first place is beyond me,
you never can understand the politics of Councils and Government departments..

How do I do make a more complex map?

ok i did a search and there is a part of NIWA which has a PDF file where you can have the above info for free.

its called NIWA Quantum Map.
you will need to go to the bottom of the page as you go you can see the basics, how much of NZ it covers i have no idea,

i haven't installed it on my computer but will give it go, maybe we can help each other out here on defining which is or how you have succeed in the installment of the product.

i am not sure if this link will activate as its a pdf file,

I HAVE LOOKED FOR HOURS FOR THOSE BUMPS! Pissed me right off.
Still like the sonar charts for looking at shape of some of my favourite inshore spots. Terribly inaccurate further out though.
