****, that's a sparse fly! Hard to imagine that looks enticing to any Tuna, I'd have thought something with a little more bulk and silhouette would be the go!... unless the Tuna there feed on Willow Grubs?!

Honestly, if you actually saw some of the strange flies they use for tuna you'd be blown away.
Just think about the guys that pole them with the white feather......

Only fish I know that would ecstatically chase a 2-3 inch fish into oblivion all day long and line up next day and do it all again. I'm not talking weenie fish either - barrels that would easily go 30 kegs and some on average.

As I said to Sappercatcha - they are certainly odd.

I've offered to tie him up a few and add a few of my own tried and tested tuna flies that will be modified a tad and can be cast on spinning gear..........Ermm

Get onto them this week for you Darryn.

Anybody hazard a guess at materials from the picture.......

Hook looks like SL12 - about 4/0
Material lashed to the shank and wrapped around tail area looks like an anorexic feather.....possibly two tied back to back.
Trying to make out what the white bit is at the hook eye.
Looks like a clear nylon material of some description??

Let's see what we come up with here.

Hello,
Was up there 18th ago, watch customs going in, any real feathers or fur, if you declare it, they will take it, seemed to have changed the rules since the time before. Also had trouble coming back as I took my rods as carry on, as had to explain why they were not offensive weapons, never had an issue any where else before, or going in, as for the tuna we found once the sun got to high they went deep, so early starts lol..
Also found that a piper style fly ( about 7 cm in length) with big eyes and a purple or bright pink top and a couple of gold tinsels worked very well on the trevs, used a couple with popper bodies as well hard to strip fast enough but once sorted with a two handed strip( rod under the arm) got dealt too. If you get stuck I could whip you up a couple.
I take a least couple a spare fly lines if fishing close to the reefs as the coral can be bloody tough sometimes on them. Esp if you cant stop them.  At worst  you can use chips from the takeway on the water front in Villa, as there are a heap of big fish hanging around to be fed there.

good luck.
The only excuse for not having a go is.... Sir I'm dead Sir !

Jaapie if was the one doing it I'd probably go with a  few yellow ostrich herls for the tail and either a white ostrich herl of a strand of flashabou for the top part; red thread and you're sorted...

But I'd definitely be more encline to use something like a skinny version of those anchovies/glass minnow you tied recently; made on a really big hook of course.

Thanks Frank for the input!

I've done up a few of those odd ones and I've tweaked them a bit to try stop the wrapping around of the material you see in the original picture.
Couldn't help myself.....

In all honesty, I have to say they must be one of the ummmm.....how can we say this.....most different........ flies to come off my vice.
My wife came over earlier - looked at them....blinked..... and asked if I was OK?
(I kid you notDead)Smile

I ended up with an ultra sparse base of crinkle nylon and for those anorexic feathers decided to use a whisp of (long) synthetic fibre.
They compact down for that ultra thin look.
Done the flashabou strand and added a single length of 1/32" holographic mylar.
I was sent another picture of the fly that doesn't quite show the strand running past the eye that has been incorporated.

Here's a shot of it - hope Darryn doesn't mind me sharing this.
Look at that fly to the right.

Ran my counterfeits under water and they looked surprisingly fishy.
Who knows - the new Holy Grail in tuna flies??

                                                 .............................................

Funny you mention those glass minnows - It's exactly what I have ended up tying in a larger version. They are genuinely my go to pattern for tuna the world over - those and another realistic baitfish pattern that I tie with old fashioned bucktail, although I've shifted away from these over time given the better stuff in synthetics.

Sappercatcha doesn't flyfish, so I've modified them with a fair old bit of weight underbody (solder) to be hurled with spinning gear - reckon they could be trolled quite well too......

Anyway - I'll reluctantly put up a photo as requested by Catchelot (says he hanging his head in shame)LOL a bit later on.
I'm a sensitive soul......no laughingTongue

Seriously though, really hope these work out for Sappercatcha and he bags a boatful.

Flies will be sent tomorrow mate.
As mentioned, no payment needed -

Perhaps stick a note into the Salvation Army Collection Box next time you see them.
All good brother....

No laughing.....ClownLOL

The flash of the camera accentuates the crinkle nylon on the right hand side fly.
Below....no flash!

Dry at the back - moistened at the front.
It's got that fishy shape about it and the material shouldn't wrap.

your version looks heaps fine mate!

About the glass minnow and your other pattern I think I'm getting the best of both world by tying a glass minnow dubbed body in front a buck tail back... you get the same shiny lightweight fly just with more mobility in the back.
I had posted some in the tying topic of the saltwater flyflingers a wee wile back (with a bit of lead hidden between the eyes to get the hook to ride point up, sorry I just can't keep things simple for more than 3 thread turns!)  they're deadly.

Thanks mate.

Sent them through to Darryn ages ago and never heard a word from him.

I'd still love to know if they ever caught anything -

Funny old world at timesErmm
