Look closely at the conditions of use for their unlimited plan. When I looked at the unlimited plan with another provider, Orcon I think, I found that they have a certain bandwidth for people on the unlimited plan, and when that was all used up the speed for people on unlimited plans went down. Here's what Spark say on their web site;

"We don't set a cap on the amount of data you upload and download in a month.

Many factors can affect the speed of your your broadband, including the type of connection into your home, latency on the national and international network, and what other people use the internet for at peak times.

We manage all of these factors on a best efforts basis. And while we won't set a cap on the amount of data you can upload or download during the month, the factors mentioned above will affect the performance of your broadband connection.

We may use traffic management policies to make sure that the available bandwidth on the network is shared fairly and efficiently between all users. Certain types of traffic may be de-prioritised so that general web-browsing, real time applications like Skype, online games and streaming video services perform better.

Yip, rubbish for me as well in Wellington - back to diual-up speeds this past year or so, just need to get of my rse and find a new provider, however too many people and contacts both business and pleasure locked to my xtra email addresses it gives me a headache to think of how I'll manage it, and the pricks charge you to carry over the xtra name ongoing monthly I believe!

have a similar issue here in P.North,

I will say though we are with Inspire (P.North based), if there is an issue we can ring and chat to a kiwi geek that can sort things out-

Speed wise well I notice a slight drop around the 4.30pm- 7 pm week days only( most kids on line)- I wont up grade to the new fiber yet as they need to come down in price- we have new fiber cables all ready installed to the letterbox-

Fly Fisher- I have various email addresses from different servers and all come in to inspire no issue-

Kevin above sums up well, espec if u have teenagers/ ppl addited to on demand, u tube and facebook

"We may use traffic management policies to make sure that the available bandwidth on the network is shared fairly and efficiently between all users. Certain types of traffic may be de-prioritised so that general web-browsing, real time applications like Skype, online games and streaming video services perform better."

A note on the myth of the 'old wire'  Old wire is heavier/ bigger diameter than new wire..current runs down the surface of the wire not thru it... old wire is more efficient so long as u dont have oxidation on the surface... espec at bared connections.
We are on old wire...been in the net since 14k modems... currently adsl2+ old wire.
I have run gaming, web / mail/ ftp servers  over the last 16 odd yrs, nps...we have optic going in around the area and not experiencing any issues..
If u are run a free monitoring program  routerstats  that will then log and indicate any external issues that maybe there

I see no need for unlimited unless downloading huge files... such as movies.
Even with the servers monthly usage is between 25 and 40gig...

Another kiwi open source prog worth having is TUC traffic usage checker.. its been around for well over 12 yrs and covers all nz isps.
And best for testing speeds is speedtest.net  which also has a smart phone app.

Speed issues are a PIA to sort out.

Changing provider usually won't fix them either (unless its a bugged out port profile. Which is set by the LFC such as Enable, UFF, Chorus etc) as physically nothing that affects speed, changes. only the billing platforms (and thats not me plugging anyone in particular, it's fact). You still have the same copper or fibre tails, to the same cabinet provided by the same lines company, the same back haul.

Then there is perceived speed issues vs actual issues. As in my case I'm on UFB. I getting 94% of what I pay for.

My PC is **** house though and pages load slowly (3 - 4 min for FB & FNet on bad day). But I can do a 10gig download in under 4 mins. So percieved speed vs actual, PIA to figure them out.

http://www.speedtest.net/

Do some speed test tell me what you get. If they are properly **** and not done over wireless and you're with Spark, hit me up via PM and I'll see if I can organise someone to have a sniff around.

All you can eat means you pay the price somewhere and that is in speed if there is load. Monitor the usage and get the team to control themselves - 3 almost teenagers here and hiding the modem when they get close to capping out is hilarious... but on the up side, the speed until then is great.
