I have seen a couple of old threads relating to the use of casting aids (Breakaway canon, etc).

Anyone still using them, used to but stopped, or about to try?

Breakaway cannon is excellent. If you take the leader around three times instead of once for the trigger clip you don't have to lock down your spool for casting.

Even casting with 80lb mono leader, the cast is still ripping the tips of my gloves off, or slicing through tape when I bind it up.  Spotted something similar on TM, then hunting around web found the cannon.  Have just put one on my 15', with a brand new JW reel with 25lb mono main into the 80lb leader with a couple of fresh pulley rigs, so see how that goes this weekend (if I can get out).

Easy to take your finger off. I sliced mine to two pieces this year with a duffed cast and a big stick bait.
The cannon was great when I used fixed spool reels.
Thoroughly recommend them

Be interested to know how you get on Jabba. I normally just use a rubber finger stall that I get from Spotlight, but I like the look of these cannons, just the mounting of them looks a bit clumsy!!!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing, by people who can't fish.

Just bought one myself, will be trying it out this weekend. I get a lot of miscasts and cut/sore fingers even with a 60lb tapered leader due to constantly wet/cold fingers (Bare in mind I don't use gloves, tape, finger covers etc and my hands are fairly calloused from my work). This also leads me to not put everything into the cast so I'm not achieving maximum distance. Will let you all know how it goes after the weekend.

Never hurt myself with a 50lb leader and a pendulum cast, but if I was prone to Id use a cast aid. Not sure if I like the standard clip or button better. Most suggest using tape to put them on, but was wondering if hose clamps wouldnt make it too uncomfortable......

Gave it a quick bash over the weekend.  Had a JW reel lose its anti-reverse first cast on a new reel, so not pleased there.  Tried a few more casts, but eventually got sick of trying to hold it all together.  Then switched to the old warehou8se brand, loaded up with the usual braid / 80lb mono leader combo.  (Which - true to form - busted off after two casts).

Of the few casts I did make, the canon performed flawlessly.  Would definitely recommend taping rather than hose clips, as it is right where you need to put your hand when you grip the trigger.  Giving it part-throttle, was clearing the mouth of the Rangitikei, having to wind back into the water.

Still no fish, but fairly confident that when they front up, this will get the bait out to them.

Yup tried mine on the weekend too. Loved it. Even with not putting much into it (due to a still sore ankle from twisting it earlier in the week) was getting decent distance compared to usual.

Sorted out a couple of issues last night, I think.  The continuous bust-offs I keep having, looks like the braid is either super light or just plain dodgy.  Bought a tag end reel of 50lb braid from Boat City, and it is way stiffer and almost waxy feeling compared to the stuff I have already (supposedly 30lb braid).

And the JW reel anti-reverse issue was the spring in the mechanism wasn't actually fitted at all, was sitting upside down on top of the latch, rather than fitted underneath it.  (Useful having a second reel to compare).  One screw and a bit of fiddling later, all sorted.  Stripped off most of the 25lb mono, and attached and wound on a couple of hundred meters of the 50lb braid.  Will attach myusual 80lb shock leader, and give it a bit of exercise over the weekend, will be interesting to see how it goes.

Well, what a difference.  The new 50lb braid, no bust offs and flies out beautifully.  The 10m colour markers aren't fading into each other, the line feels great and the knots tie nicely and hold beautifully..

The JW anti reverse failed again, so swapped the reel to the other frame, no more dramas.

With the casting aid, was slinging a whole pilchard with 5lb sand sinker on pulley rig with couple of floats 120m + (according to the colour change markers), with a bit left in reserve, I reckon. Might go up to a 6 or 8lb to load up the rod a bit more.

That was getting it out behind the second breakers, and the bait was being stripped within a few minutes each time, so that is where the fish seem to be.  Now to get them to hang on to the hooks.
