Wow.....the squid fishing at Waiheke nothing short of exceptional this season. Anyone else enjoying the water clarity in other areas?

Cool. What set up to catch these babies? My soft baits have been getting hit a bit by squid. Keen to catch some for something different.

Cheers

Do u have to fish for these at night?
What are the best tides?
What sort of areas does one look for from a boat?
If at night, what sort of lighting?

I do like my Squid rings.. and the gut for burely, the tentacles bait.

Firstly, there are many more experts than me in this field.....an hour or two looking round youtube wil def help with technique.
A liteweight braid, 10lb fluorocarbon and I only use BM jigs around the 2.5 or 3.0 size at this time of the year. Look for shallow weedy areas, the clearer the water the better. In the boat, I target them in the daylight hours.....the less wind the better. If overnighting, a spotty on the back of the boat can help as can any light source from other means....e.g. A house on a hill! Tidal flow should be minimal and stage of tide of no importance I find. If there are two you and one hooks one, a slow retreival will often see a few following the one hooked. Get your mate to then throw his jig at the 'followers'. Once hes hooked up, get him to hold it there whilst you deal with your one then target the followers around his jig. This 'raid' can often catch several squid in a match of minutes. Like I say, am no expert but this seems to work for me :-)

Yes.....look for quiet windless bays on northern side....any weed in 5 meters....from oneroa to garden cove....little to no current. So many places to try....sou west best.

There seem to be alot around the bottom end of waiheke, we had them sucking and chasing our baits up right to the boat on saturday it was quite impressive watching them try to consume whole pillies. didnt have any squid jigs and couldnt manage to net any though. i assume it is not possible to hook them on ordinary hooks

Occassionally you do or get your net in behind them if quick. However if you like eating calamari as I do, targeting them with squid jigs is the only way to go and unlike some fish species, the ones you see you will most likely catch....if you throw a squid jig at them.

Cpoint is onto it . Squid are very dumb, if one drops off your jig leave the jig right there as it will jump right back on. Up here in Whangaparaoa, I've seen them drop off into rock pools on retrieval only to take the same jig seconds later!
