Well following on from Rainbow's recent post I thought I would share one of my new patterns that I have been getting some good results on this winter fishing the Tongariro.

Basically the pattern is tied on a shank with a 50lb power pro loop to which I attach a size 4 Daichi Intruder hook. The hook is attached by way of a triple loop... on the final loop i pull the bunny tail through which has the affect of leaving the hook in the tail (tip up) and free swinging.

The fly is tied with a 4.6mm tungsten bead in the body which is used as a wing to prop the ostrich plume (not to be confused with ostrich hearle) fibres up which are key to the flies movement.

The hook up to catch conversion rate on the fly so far is perfect.  I tied this pattern in brown (barred) and natural however olive seems to be the favourite flavour on the Tongariro.

Follows on from the Intruder idea. Where on the shank is the braid loop attached?     Do you use it with your double hander?

The braided loop is attached from the back of the shank and secured by tying it forward along the top before doubling it back under he shank. I then apply some super glue for added strength. It is important that you file the end of the shank smooth after you cut the hook off otherwise the braid will fray.

Yep this fly has evolved from intruder style flies which I tie and use allot too. All my streamer fishing is done with a switch rod and skagit line. I can't ever see myself going back to a single handed rod for swinging streamers in the Tongariro.

Cheers

Have borrowed your idea of the ostrich plume and included it in some rabbit flies for more movement.     Not having any ostrich so I made do with marabou.    Will do the trick.

Green butt is lumo.

Yeh nice one they look good and will no doubt catch. I might have to track down some of that lumo material!

Ostrich Plume is a pretty unique material. It is stiffer than marabou but retains nice movement. It is the key material in the intruder and the most important concept when using it is the wing that you form underneath it to prop it out and give the fly body. Without a wing the plumes will lye flat around the body in the current. The most popular material for doing this is arctic fox which you spin in a dubbing loop.
In my fly I used a 4.6mm tungsten bead as the wing. It doesn't have the same affect of an arctic fox wing but it does enough to stop the plumes from running hard against the body.
The idea is that you are increasing the flies silhouette and adding movement with very minimal use of material. This makes casting easier and also a fly that will sink very fast.

I am familiar with the intruder tying technique and the reasons why they spin one or two collars of fox or deer hair to create a larger shoulder to make the strands flow outside the body for a fuller silhouette.   My understanding is that the intruder aims to imitate a small squid on which the salmon and steelhead are feeding on while at sea, hence the different colours of the "tentacles".   Here it makes more sense to use the technique to imitate bait fish, as you have.

Cheers
