Took a break from the kingfish yesterday. Wolfie and I spent the day chasing kahawai in an area close to town. The conditions weren't ideal, especially for ultra light fly with strong winds and wave stirred water but we made the most of it. Wolfie was using his #3 CD Rods ICT, while I was using one of my #3 Maxcatch Ultra Glass 703-3 rods. The first three hours went without so much as a touch, but an hour before low water, the kahawai came on with a vengeance. There were no big fish, but on the light rods, they pulled some string. We probably caught over 50 between us before we were eventually pushed out by the incoming. All the fish were released, a couple of which probably wouldn't survive. It happens. If you are keen to give it a go, the Maxcatch Ultra Glass rods are beautiful rods, are ridiculously cheap, and provide top sport on kahawai of all sizes. Cheers

When Mudfish says 50 between us the ratio was 3:1 in his favour ... but a hectic session ensued when the fish were finally located with several double hookups.

We were singled out for some harrasement by an elderly kite sailor who was taking out his post-mid life crisis by buzzing around us. Mudfish let him know what sort of a person he was and he left us shortly after that.

Weather still featured the all too common gusty westerly wind but the 3 weights were still able to get the distance to the fish. Part of Mudfish's success was his intermediate line that was helping get his Barbie Clouser down to the crab eating kahwai down on bottom. My floater was definitely not helping me but luckily  I had a short sinking leader salvaged from a piece of a wrecked deep sink line - and with that on I started getting fish. I had only 10cm of leader to the fly to make sure it stayed down in the strike zone.

Barbie charms still attract kahawai of all sizes

Mudfish hauling in another one

Finding fish on the foam line where incoming tide pushed up against the estuary flow

My fish was bigger ...

And there were some explosions happening in the waves - some kingfish munching on the tasty juvenile kahawai no doubt.

Went out this monring with the 3 weight and got one kahawai deep down from a channel with some boats passing by - one of whom stopped to watch the crazy guy with the bent fly rod. Held the fish up to show him when I landed it and he waved back and then continued on his way.

Great pics as always Wolfie Good to see so many young kahawai. They seem to be residents in estuary systems at that age and then, at around three years of age, they begin to lose the yellow spots and start to migrate around the country. This is when the bloody purse seiners get them

Had to laugh about your comments about the kite surfer. They are a huge pain in the arse! Middle age morons on SUPs are next on my hate list

Nobody seems to understand how peaceful and understanding we swoffers really are

Jet skis are the biggest pain in the butt for me, and the local jet ski fraternity know it. It is interesting that if there is an ice box on the back and rod holders fitted, no problem, those guys tend to be courteous. The last thing I need near me is a high rev engine screaming its guts out near me when I am fishing.

I have a good relationship the local SUP fraternity. If they see me, they often come over with news of where they have seen stingrays with kings. I really appreciate that. I have got a lot of these guys trained and working for me.

Most kite surfers are good, just the odd pr... who is a problem. If they p... me off, I let them know it. The guy on Saturday had mental issues, and he saw the mental side of me.

Cheers

Well the usual story is kahwai run hard when hooked and usually jump , like this guy this morning on the 3wt at Meola.

Then twice he ran at the mangroves either side of me. I turned him away from the one to my left so he then cgarged over and buried himself in the one on the right side. And he them twisted and thrashed and got off and left the hook tangled so I had to wade over and unpick it.

Even the snapper there have never tried it on in all the years I fished there   ... smart little sod!
Maybe he will grow up and become a kingfish Tongue

Thanks Mudfish - the great thing about photographing fishing is you catch images as well as fish  or even when the fish don't cooperate!

Eye to eye. Kahawai meets a green eyed bucktail.

Nice! That's a whole lot more than I caught on fly today. It was a very frustrating day with a lot more wind than they predicted.

And love those jumping shots too Wolfie Great skills as always
