The carry-on bags are an excellent investment and seem to get around all these problems. I put in all my stuff req'd on a flight, ie book, medicine, etc, plus the fishing gear.
I was in there today and I think that the only bag in stock in NZ is there. They said that the importer has no more stock.

Yea good call. Il pop down to the airport today and check with them about the tube strapped to the backpack. As you said though its often down to the person you get as you board as to whether they allow it or not. One of those fishpond bags would be a good investment I think!

So - from all this I'm taking it that there are no worries about reels and line in carry-on bags??

Reels being small and heavy are the one thing I would transfer to carry-on. Can always borrow a rod if the worst happens and your stowed baggage goes to Afghanistan.

Well guys, just had the second day on Raro today. What an awesome place! Wife is loving the snorkeling. I managed to get a quick spot of swff'ing in just north of the airport. Got a couple of tiny bluefin trev's and had a decent size one charge the fly but couldn't get a take.

Also had a medium size (8-10kg) GT come through, but I was sloppy and spooked it. Probably a good thing as I only had the 8# and it was pretty reefy territory.. Can't wait for Aitutaki now!!!

Sounds like things are warming up nicely for you Fraser.
We did not spend any nights in Raro but had a few hours between flights. Spent a couple of hours at the bar across from the airport and were treated to a display from some whales just outside the reef.
On our return trip we had a little longer so walked to the port area. If you get a chance have a look by the boats adjacent to the filleting table. A yellow boat from memory , some massive resident bluefin trevally and probably the biggest GT you will ever see , some suitable food scraps will help.
Have a good one.

Had a ball today with a few bluefin trevally in raro. Good excuse to play them hard from the reel and test out my knots. All good. Watch out bones, Fraser is on his way.

Not liking the forecast with thunder and lightening predicted for Aitutaki but maybe its Thor himself welcoming me?

Well im back.  Had a magnificent time, both on Raro and on Aitutaki.  Total tally for the trip was 3 fish but id have been in the double digits if was better at listening to Butch's advice!
Stuffed a few fish up when they nose down and took the fly, but did I strip strike? No..... I either did the bloody stupid trouty rod lift or just stared agog.  Got to get my game sorted hey?
Butch your a bloody legend mate!  Even on a tough days fishing, he pulled out all the stops and put me in front of some awesome fish.  I look forward to fishing with you again in the future mate, oh and a nice cold beer with you at the end!   All fish were sight cast and non of this dragging flys around in dirty water, just so you can say you have caught a bonefishThumbs Down.  If your going to do that, you may as well go coarse fishing IMO.

Il post a full report once I get some spare time, but what with heading into the backcountry for opening this weekend, it might not be till next week.  Prepare your eyes for a barrage of exquisite blue's,  sharp whites and some sexy bonefish! Tongue

Nice one Fraser, sight caught bones is certainly a great way to get them.
