Just finished 5 days fishing the southern islands in Oman for GT. We are sitting in a hotel in Salalah waiting to fly out tomorrow back to NZ so have some time to kill so thought I would put up a quick report.

Sami and I have been trying off an on for the last two years to fish together and finally our calendars matched up and Oman it was going to be. Josh W put his hand up at the last minute to take the last spot.

I will not bore you with all the details except to say the Omani fishery is simply off the hook! over the five days the smallest GT we caught was 24kg's yep thats a very small fish here in Oman! we also caught Queenfish, Yellow Spot Trevally, Emperor, Grouper, Milkfish and small Tuna all on topwater.

Our GT count ended with 3 fish on the 50kg mark, 1 x 42kg, 8 fish from 30-35kgs and a 24kg fish. Incredible fishing and we got dusted up by some real monsters that would have easily hit the 60kg mark, right now our bodies feel like we have been run over by trains, long days of casting and brutal fights in shallow water.

The fishing options here are endless, sailfish feeding on the reefs, huge Amberjack offshore and regular Marlin sightings not uncommon make this a pretty special fishery.

I am definitely coming back to Oman, maybe even in October to catch the run of huge Amberjack on jig and GT on topwater and then again next April for the monster GT season!

Enjoy the photos they pretty much sum up our adventure.

Tony

Very cool, Thanks for posting.
That will get the guys back in  Los Saunos fired up :)
I take it Josh hung up the Daiwa Saltist to catch some of those bigger GT's ?

I think you got the species wrong, they are not GTs

They are HGTs, humongous giant trevally.

Really awesome pics, enjoyed that.

The trip worked out pretty good, without sounding like a tosser this is what we went for and it is peak season, our catches were "Normal" for this time of the year. The other lodge boat caught a 60kg and a 50kg fish on the last day so between the two boats we got 1 x 60kg, 3 x 50kg, 2 x 35kg GT and a 30kg Wahoo plus some other mixed speiecs in one day of topwater fishing on our last day, thats pretty bloody good fishing but to be expected. We did loose some very very big fish but I guess thats what keeps you wanting to travel and keep casting eh!

Its very safe, the people are friendly and helpful, all our gear was left out at night and they have never had an issue with gear being stolen.
