Yeah, I did my F14, was bugger all from memory, well under $300 (but I got a deal from a sign writer I deal with sometimes through my business). It's holding up REAL well with sinkers banged against the sides even, rope hauled over it, still glossy - think it was calandered (or perhaps cast) vinyl?? It's supposed to be good for 9 years or something?... Far more practical than paint IMO on an ali boat.

We are thinking about doing Fissure's boat when it arrives in 'water camo' or something similar, and I may redo mine with 'trout spots' I'm a graphic designer so easy to get the graphics sorted.

They applied it, but easy to do yourself (especially if you have worked with vinyl before) if you have a good steady hand and good preparation work - (I rubbed with Isopropol alcohol really thoroughly) prior. Jonocoogee knows his stuff, he was helpful when I initially thought about getting it done - there's a BIG market in NZ IMO for vinyl wraps... Shhhhhhh

Not to sure on the cost vs painting but you can get some awesome results http://www.salthouseboats.com/showcase-full-metal-jacket.html this boat was done with a stick on metallic film and a small boatgenerally would be in and out in a day ratehr than a week or more for painting and get sick of it pull it off and redo.

Hi Time Bandit,

I've vinyl wrapped the hull only on my boat (Nylac top sides) Once vinyled I also covered entire sides with 3M Stoneguard film as added protection. You couldn't really tell if it was painted or not, but time will tell how well it lasts  - especially as far as swirl marks go, which can be got rid of in paint by rebuffing, but not so with vinyl. However job is now over 6 months old and still looks like new.
Advantages of vinyl are that job is in and out in one day. I also just recently had a bit of an accident with the boat (won't go into thatAngry) but after removing the dent, we revinyled whole side no troubles at all.
I own a sign shop, so the cost thing didn't come into it for me, but to give you an idea, to do the whole hull, complete with stoneguard would cost you about $3500. Based on a boat similar to mine. You could probably halve that without the stoneguard, however beauty of the added protection is sinkers etc aren't damaging the paint - no stone chips in the bow from towing - and when I got my dent, the film was untouched!
You could paint and add stoneguard to painted surface as well.
My advice would be to get a price both for paint and vinyl wrapping. Vinyl by itself without the stoneguard WILL NOT take the knocks as well as paint, but when vinyl starts to look tatty, just peel it off and apply new stuff. No sanding or anything to worry about.
So both ways have pros and cons.
My boat after it's maiden voyage!

If it's just topsides, I wouldn't bother with stoneguard, and I'd probably go with vinyl here than paint, as I'm sure by the time areas have been masked and prepd, vinyl will be quite a saving $ wise.

Don't blame you. the local printer in whakatane, near the  warehouse stationery quoted me 150 for a 5mtr wrap well just the sides anyway. but you have to apply it on a hot day to warm up the alloy.

Hi Rav, don't bother about wrapping any handles, bow rails etc - just leave them bare alloy. You're right in that wrapping those would be a real pain, and would most likely wear off pretty quickly because of the knocks they'd take

Would this vinyl wrapping work for an outboard cowling? I have a spare for my DF140 and might as well do something different with it. Am a self certified master of photoshop :) but need to know if the vinyl could neatly mold over the curves of a cowling?

Shouldn't be too much of a problem for an experienced signwriter. Make sure you talk to a sign company first before creating photoshop files, as we generally need certain file types to recreate the graphics, and the file type will be determined by the design you want. Eg, photographic images are fine with photoshop but not so for text or hard line stripes etc.

Hey Guys,

Just thought Id jump in and ask for some advice on where I i can go for wrapping my boat. I wish to redo the side and graphics on the boat. The existing graphics have stained the gelcoat to the point of no return so look for a complete blackwrap and maybe a stonegaurd at the front for the anchor. I approached one place but was quoted $900 + cost for travel and labour. This seems excessive for a small 4.50m boat with a fairly shallow waterline - compared to the prices ive heard other people mentioning. Any advice really appreciated :)

PS. In the Auckland Region

Pic attached...

Revilo,

$900 does sound quite a bit for materials only. I would think if you shop around you could find someone to do the whole wrap for around a similar price applied. If the sides being wrapped are under 610mm high (half roll height.) It will work in your favour as there wont be much waste. Make sure they use cast films. These have the longest life, mould the best and have a uv/petrol/motor oil resistance.

Cheers
jono
