Check these out - the comment in the book [The Adventurous LIfe of Kelly Tarlton, E.V. Sale1988] goes 'Kelly with two packhorse crays caught off Flat Island, south of Whangaroa Harbour, about 1964 - in the days when crayfish were really crayfish'
 
 
Not sure if they were caught freediving, the book definitely talks about spearfishing for them but I suspect they were on tanks. However - still monstrous.

KT was a very good spearo.  He appears to have done the first recorded 100 foot freedive in NZ that I can find anyway.

Those are some impressive packies. Dunno about the rest of you, but we've always found packhorse to be far more docile than reds. Sure they are big and it's kinda hard to work out where to grab them, but they don't seem to react as much once you actually have a hold on them.
