If I remember correctly (and if it hasn't changed over the past few years), all the channels hold some water even at low tide, but there are quite big flats exposed as well. There is certainly plenty of water in the entrance and surrounding area even at low tide. We used to stay at the Paua camping ground and mainly fish the entrance and the 'Southern' channel for quite a way up it's length. The Tope were a problem when fishing, but never even thought about them when I was swimming. There used to be plenty of Snaps in the harbour and I would be surprised if there still wasn't today. One thing we did learn very quickly though was that between the Rays and Tope it is not a place to put a longline down!

there used to be the remains of a old sand barge on the bottom a few hundred mts short of the mouth of the harbour,if you want BIG travelly have a look there, any of the channel edges will have fish around them,in summer lots of kingfish you can see them up in the shallow water because the sand is so white,if theres not to much sweell go to spirts bay and swim out to the island, that should be fun

parenga's probably the most productive harbour in the country, still has its quieter times like anywhere though and the fish do move around a bit within the harbour.  eagle rays and carpets are usually in plague proportions along with bronzies.  those turtles are actually really common, over the summer whole famalies of them group up just off Te hap's wharf eating stuff on the surface, we see them at spirits bay allot too they must love sitting in that current.  dog island and in front of dysons is my fav part of the harbour

Smelly i have heard from someone where was a wreck with trevs. I would love to check that out, sounds like an interesting dive. Are the trevs on the wreck all tides? Seeing Turtles would be a bonus. I have thought about spirits as a mate has been up that way for kings before however the sea isn't always forgiving up that way is it.

Have a look in the latest Fishing Coast to Coast magazine for Milan's article on Parengarenga. Snaps, kings and big trevs

Milan is also using SWF in the article. They were nailing trevs on some of KTB's 'Red Bunny Rabbit' flies.

Paul, when are you going and where were you planning to stay. If its spring time and you decide to stay in Houhora check out the harbour mount right by the campground, Kings sit in the current in real shallow and pick off baitfish as it floods out, usually good viz there too, just jump in and drift, you'll end up on east beach. Scallops just off the beach in 5-7m too. For Crays, Paua and really big snapper the west coast is unreal if you get clear water (not all that often) around Ahipara and Scott's Point, do not get in at the Bluff, it's the Sharkiest (big sharks!) place I've ever seen, we used to surf there but on at least 10 occasions out a total of I guess 20 surfs we got "escorted " from the water by overly curoius XOS Bronzies and Makos. We were young and stupid so kept going back- I would'nt go near the water there now. In spring you get the Orca chasing the rays in close too- awesome to watch. It's Paradise up there, enjoy!

Hi KJ, I'll be going up next saturday, I imagine there will be a few more trips of similar nature. I'm not sure what the accommodation situation is, someone else has that sorted. I'll get on google and check out your suggestions. Sounds like it will be exciting. I would mind heading back up in a few months. Its always just a question of getting time off work for me.

Mr Bean - i checked out that shark photo before heading out in the whangarei harbour. I think its in victoria going by the number plate in the photo. Massive creature, not something you want between you and the shore. Unfortunately weather packed up and i didn't get up to the parengarenga but there is always next time.

haha i stopped in and said I'm here to see your shark photo please and the bloke told me a story about south Africa, one about Victoria and then one about the P harbour. He then went on to tell me about a creature he called Brutus, a monster that patrols the 3 kings and refuses to be caught. I would like to hear more about that mighty creature. You heard that one?
