A brief summary over last few years, hope others can add to where it has all gone wrong.

Scallops Comms longer season smaller scallops
reccs have lost in last 10yrs? 4/6 weeks off season
Crayfish sna2 Comms have dispensation to take take smaller crays due to few numbers.
reccs made to feel uncomfortable setting pots even having them removed.

Snapper Comms still at 250mm with no sign of reducing mortality or offering to increase net/change design.False reporting of fish dumped or not reported till public find them washed up?
Reccs have had size cuts bag limits dropped,we have changed our methods to reduce mortality.

some will have you think its what we have to put up with because the economy needs the money,

others will say its our duty to supply the world with cheap food,

then there are those that say we need the jobs,

in the end no matter what the excuses are for reducing the amount of seafood in NZs waters is, we are not obliged in anyway to do so, its all bull****,
its nothing more than the rich making money from something they can rip off from what belongs to the people of NZ,

we are now heading to the bottom of the barrel and its going on empty...

Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing

on the positive side:
Commercial paua fishermen in Southland and Otago had their claim to open up recreational only areas to commercial activities denied.
Commercial and recreational cod fishermen in Southland reduced quota and bag limits (30 down to 20) together. This was due to lower demand for cod for the commercial guys, and 30 cod simply being to bloody many for recreational.
Recreational bag limits for crayfish in Fiordland were increased to reflect the improving levels of Crayfish in that area.

In the case of Paua the community did most of it themselves, there was some input from legasea towards the end, but I was already involved in more homegrown groups by that stage and didn't have a lot to do with them.

the Cod thing was led by commercial fishermen and supported by the recs

the crayfish in fiordland was an easy concession from MPI considering the accessibility of fiordland

Not sure how much involvement there was from any groups such as legasea in the backrooms, we submitted a large number of statements through work (800 very well paid and keen fishermen on site can swing a bit of weight locally), we also had the council and Iwi's on side as well due to the publicity it was creating down here.

does this sound familiar .....

ecFish SA is concerned about potentially confusing claims published in the Whyalla News on May 8, 2014. In the article, a local commercial fisherman claimed that recreational fishing is to blame for poor snapper catches in the Spencer Gulf. This is at odds with the best available information and RecFish SA believe it is important to focus on the need for sustainable fisheries management.

A RecFish SA Spokesperson David Ciaravolo said “Claims that recreational bag limits are the same as commercial catches do not reflect reality.

“According to PIRSA’s 2011 Snapper Options Paper, the annual commercial catch is approximately 918 tonnes, whereas the recreational catch is much less, at only 178 tonnes.

“With commercial fishers accounting for around 80% of the total catch, blaming recreational fishers for a decline in stocks is an unusual position to take.

“It is also at odds with state fisheries managers, who in the 2011 Paper said, that future sustainability should, and I quote, ‘focus on the commercial sector due to the high catch and effort and potential impact on the resource’.

“Recreational fishers understand that all sectors must play a part in ensuring sustainable fish stocks, however, with the commercial sector taking 80% of the total catch and being allowed to long-line for snapper, with up to 200 hooks per line, recreational fishers have serious concerns about the impact this focus on efficiency is having on snapper stocks.
