cheers Pirate. Sounds similar to here in Welly. Normally get a few in late Nov out wide but the big numbers dont start til Xmas. Sooner they arrive the better I reckon! Im v keen on heading up to NP for a marlin hunt this summer if time off work etc allows...I hope it's an epic year. Naki is such an awesome spot - I'd love to land my first rod caught marlin there.

Paddled out to 90m off the port looking for albies but only found fishing boats wherever I went.     Then back to 40m when I saw terns coming in from out wide so turned and went out to 90 m again.   No birds and no fish but a nice day to be out there.    A bit buggered after a 39.2km paddle.    Must be getting old.    Temperature mostly 21 degrees and nice blue water.

Spotted 4 marlin tails poking out of the chop South of Kawhia yesterday in 40-50m. Not all at once, all within the same general area. A couple were very close to the boat but still showed no interest in the spread. They cant have been hungry or maybe our plastics wern't looking too good in the chop! Was pretty sloppy conditions. Good sign in the area, we got plenty of fat Albies, none I dont think really small enough for a livey. No skippes. Water 21.5 - 22.

First Day out Trolling in the new boat. Went out to the 100m line then trolled north. Heard from another boat that they had a Marlin up in their gear back toward the Nipple. We headed there and ploughed the paddock for a while.

Had a big hit on the Long rigger about 12.15. It thrashed on the surface for a bit then peeled a lot of line. got our selves sorted and started getting some line back. It didn't break the surface or go down the whole fight. stayed just under the surface the whole time. Had it to the boat after about 20min. Grabbed the leader and it was tracking nicely beside the boat. We were just about to get a tag in and it made a sharp inwards turn and the hooks pulled and gone. It was a big fish. Certainly one of the biggest I have seen out off New Plymouth. Turns out that the hook had straightened out at some point in the fight which is why they pulled so easily at the boat. if there are a few big ones around we may have re-think our hook sizes.

Bit of a bugga, but better to have a bugga than nothing at all in a day i guess. Water Temp was good 20-21 all day. Flicked over to 22 with some sun on it at one point. Plenty of Birds around. Nice looking water. All encouraging stuff.
