On the way in around 105m, saw some tuna on the surface so out go the teaser, two tuna lures and a 9.5" Pakula cockroach in violeta.

Stripy came in fast all lit up, smashed the Pakula and took off on a good run

Settled in for the fight. 15mins in and the reel breaks away from the rod- top and bottom reel seats are broken. Found some electrical tape which did the job.

Had the fish on for 3 hours- most of that time the leader was just out of reach. Grabbed the bill and hung on while my bro let loose with the welcome aboard bat.

Pulled it onboard easy an pie and headed for home.

Two happy Smith brothers right there

105.6kg Striped marlin

Pakula cockroach 9.5" violeta
3m 150lb leader
Shimano backbone elite 10-15kg rod
Penn 950ss reel
4.5kg drag

WTF everyone else has all the big goldies and fancy new hooks with new lures and here u guys are in a 14'6  tinny with one lure and a good old Penn 9500ss,
that is not fair to all those that spent $1000s of bucks and still nothing.
Great result guys Congrates on ur marlin, love the video footage, enjoy your spoils u certainly deserve it...
thanks for sharing this excellent capture in a small boat...

Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing

Awesome Smith Bros! inspiring... hopefully next week it'll be my turn. Haven't popped my cherry yet. Been out twice over the manukau,so far only managing to catch albies and skippys, and a mahimahi yesterday but no marlin.

Seems like the west coast is firing, Up from wellington from the 13th for two weeks based out of bay of islands but was wondering what the boat launching opportunities are like up Ahipara ways? To keep options open for any weather windows.

We were next to you in a little stabi, we headed out a bit deeper and on the way back in saw
you hooked up. we went "****" should have stayed on that bait,
buying usless exspensive fishing gear is my second favourite hobby.

Those 950s have the weakest crosswind gear I've ever seen and that exact model backbone rod have such a brittle reel seat...

...so to land a marlin using that set up...
