Hi guys, were staying at Paihia and wondering about heading over and going out from Opononi as the forecast is way better than here - anyone heading out from there we can follow out?? Were not so sure about the bar?

Hey Hook up, I live in Opononi and am over the bar all the time. PM me and I can always have a chat on the phone or follow me out. We had water to 24 degrees over the last weekend. Although we didn't hook up there were 5 Marlin Caught.
we stopped on one marlin that was chasing fish around in circles, offered a dead bait which it swam up to sniffed it and buggered off again, this was only in 105m.

We were out today over the manakau. We only heard of 1 marlin caught.  We had a freejumper nearly land in the back of the boat at 98m and that was all the marlin action of note we heard.

3 albies for the crew, heaps and heaps of bait out there, water 22

Also CR a 40kg Mako to finish the day off where we managed to rescue the lure

Crossed Manukau bar North Channel just before 6am today. Started setting lures in 50m of Karekare when a lit up strypie had a swipe at Alby lure (pink ted's) rigged with new Bonze light 8/0. It came back and I free spooled the stella, gave it 5 seconds before I engaged again and it came up tight. Gave the rod to my mate Daniel that did a great job to pop his cherry and that on the spin gear. Chased it down hard and had leader in hand soon after, est 95-100kg. Daniel wanted his first one to swim free so a few hard pulls on leader and it was on its way. All this before 7am. Carried on to 70m off Piha when another strypie came up on dredge and dropped back to swipe BTK but missed it by miles. Such a lazy bite I couldn't believe it. Saw 2 more slashing the shallow bait. Plenty Makos that kept taking Albys off. Best temp 22.3.
Certainly more action then last week. Caught up with the boys from Mean Machine at ramp, they had one in the boot think it nailed the 5.5 B/P Zuker. Still not much skipjack out there.
