Have just gotten in from a dive for a few crays.... Swell still 1-2 m but lengthening out. Max wind today just over 10 knots - sea state very workable - should be a good one tomorrow. Fishing today - only a solitary stripey flag and a mako showing at the club.... They have to feed sometime.....

Went out yesterday for a half day. Went north of the chicks and fished around the 120 off oceans. Most of the bait on the 100m line. So were the makos... Didn't see a beakie, got a couple of nice alberts. Lost my zuker zuchinni to one I think - nice cut though line. Then around 5, short corner got smashed by about a 6ft mako. Using Pakula double hook rig so the wire held the fish. Recovered the lure but could not get the hooks so cut him off.
Was interesting to see the bait behaviour with it though. Found some scattered bait, gradually it balled up, then went vertical and I said to my crew mate, that's bait under predator pressure and boom, shark time.

turtle have a look at this website and get a local fabricator to knock you one up.....they are great for getting hooks out of sharks....martin Wallace made mine for about $60 from memory.....you simply slip the pig tail over the line/wire, move it down to the bend of the hook and give it a good jerk and it pops out

1 strike 1 tag 1 in the bag for 2 days fishing full report tomorrow

A plan was hatched and on Friday I met up with Mark Kelly and his boat Darado. Loaded all the gear and headed north to Tutukaka. We put the boat in the water ready for the next day.

In the morning we met Derek and Darren and we headed north of the Knights. Did many circles and eventually headed south of the Knights where we had a strike and a loss.

Sunday 6 am, we met Gerrit and Dirk, associates of Marine Deals. We headed out wide of the Knights and about 1:50pm we had our first strike and about an hour later we tagged the fish and it swam away nicely. Congratulations Dirk, you are no longer a virgin.

The wind was starting to get up and the day was getting long so we started heading back in. We got to north east of the Knights at about 7:00pm and saw a workup and started to proceed to head through it and all hell broke loose on the second fish.

As Gerrit and Dirk were from overseas we decided to give them the chair for the day.
Gerrit wanted his cousin to take both fish. After another good battle we had the fish boat side and decided to take it for the smoker.

Two fish in one day is a dream. Dirk’s dream came true and the day was very special for all.

Congrats Mark, a great weekend
Regards

Nice report Ian. Good to hear there's some activity up there.  Sounds like action packed day and some happy fellas at end of it.
Some mates of mine dropped two blues behind kumera patch a week or so ago.  One lost green at boat after 45 minutes and the other broke off on same fruit salad lure they  hooked up on hour later.  Both they estimated at over 200kgs.
We are heading up  to do girls comp soon.  Never know we might hopefully see one, not that we've tried yet.  Feel like the season has left me  behind already.
How's your boat goin Ian?

Krow -as is usual this time of year -we are coming to take you on, on your home patch! Talk sometime soon on the radio and don't catch all the mahi mahi before we get there.

Top work guys...

I did Sat and Sun with my son behind the poor Knights.  was very quiet Sat...although it looked fishy in places.. didnt pick up a skippy or albie all day....  stayed the night at the poor knights...
Went wide again Sunday... got a treble of mahi...  but that was all we saw....  better than a kick in the nuts I suppose..  but hanging out for a marlin... or YF for that matter..
