I need to replace my vhf (fixed mount). Been running uniden for the past 17 years but current Solara stuck on channel 16 for the second time this year. Quite a bit of choice in the under $300 basic 25w vhf bracket. Any recommendations? Currently looking between Cobra mrf55-d, Uniden Solara UM380, Lowrance link-5.

Being a small Stabi that gets a bit of water (mainly rain) over the radio, I am tending towards the jis7 or ipx7 models. Nmea not a requirement. Incidently, both Cobra & Uniden currently available under $200. Fishing done predominantly less than 20km from shore in Gulf and BOI.

Thanks

Get a ipx7 model - I have a UM380 Uniden which is not ipx7 rated when I bought it (my recollection is you have to go to next model which is more expensive, UM380 only splash rated) - on my third unit - original failed after 6 years - replaced with same as convenient  mounting etc, new one failed in 6 months "full of water" had to convince service department had not been submerged - reluctantly they then gave me a new unit.  I knew issue was spray/washing as tacho and fish finder had both failed over this time as well - I have been out in some bad conditions at times - I fitted cover in photo and no problems since.  Either spend coin and get ipx7 rating or put covers on like I have - probably best to do both if getting wet.  Cheers

Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish.

I have a Cobra fixed mount IPx7 rated VHF.  It's now ~10 years old and no issues. I have flush mounted it but the front panel and hand piece are very exposed.
