Had a lovely day out on the water today - Fishing Nth and East of Gannet - tried wider towards happy jacks - but best fishing was back Nth of Gannet.  As per the reports - there were Dolphins everywhere - and the whales put on an amazing display in the middle of the Firth of Thames.  Finished with a nice 6.9kg Snap that Grant put in the bin, Ollie was next up in terms of size and I was a distant third :-(
So 2 Gurnard and 17 Snaps came home with some of the best memories and photos.  The whale shots show how close they came to the boat... less than a whales length..

Fished that same area this morning.  Got a few, mostly Rangi champs.  Bait for africa, dolphins and birds tried hard but no sustained workups.  Couldn't find the whales.  What time did they show up? All over for me and Evil by 11am.

How far away.. h'mm two answers I guess, they were in the area NE of Gannet Rock about 5 miles I'd guess from Gannet Rk. You can see Coromandel and Chan Is and Barrier in the photos -it was a clear day - so they look closer.
When we saw the whale action I motored over to where I last saw them and stopped.  One breached about 250 mtrs away from the boat.  That whale seemed to be diving down, and coming in a spiral - when it surfaced, the beak of the whale came up high as per the photos - and the whale continued to circle on the surface - prob 100m in diameter - and once the first breach, the whale seemed to roll over onto the side - you can see the tail fin vertical - and the whale continued to complete a circle.  It then dived again.  Each time it surfaced it was closer to us.  We never moved, and so the whales surfacing became more predictable to us, the last surfacing was about 8 Mtrs from the boat. The blowing and spray and water noise made for a great experience.

Stunning photos, just stunning. All of them. Nice backdrop on the last one What a fin. Sights like that,so simple yet profound are what makes life so rich. That snapper looks like a early  fresh run spring fish--the colour on it.

Have yet to see a whale out there in person.,but one day it will happen. Thanks for sharing.

Superb shots alright! Those whales must've kept the jaws dropping, very cool.
They weren't feeding on baitfish though ay, looks more like Spring fever has hit the Brydes? Wink

They were over by the happy jacks today for an hour or so, not feeding but docile enough for us to get along side them. We only saw two and picked up a couple of descent gurnard there as we drifted along watching them.
