Bit of a late report , but went out targeting Tarakihi off Leigh on Sunday. I've been going up there for the past few years doing a couple of trips each winter chasing the Leigh Tarakihi which are big ( for Tarakihi) but quite elusive. The best I've done is 4 on a trip , but they were up around 50cm.  Had a good search around pre dawn for about 45min without a lot of sign on the sounder. Finally settled on a few likely looking marks in 52m. Set the burley going and caught a procession of Gurnard and Pannie Snapper until the Kahawai turned up and had to haul in and release about 20 huge fat Kahawai around the 3 to 4kg mark. I found that by casting out to the side, not in the direct burley flow I would get more Gurnard and Snapper, finally managing a good 47cm Tarakihi. All the fish prefering shellfish or  squid bait over salted skippie, unusual. After a few more double hookups on Kahawai that I was hoping would be massive Tarakihi, I pulled the pin. Ended up with 7 snapper to 45cm, 6 Gurnard of medium East coast size and one 47cm Tarakihi so not bad for a morning. I'm sure that there will be some great Tarakihi spots in the area, I just haven't found them yet. Looking forward to getting back for another hunt around.

Love a good Tarakihi fillet, well done rowboat bob. Slimey buggers but well worth the effort.
No half measures!

Nice sized tarakihi alright.
Amateur - The way I get around the slime problem is lay them out on the grass and then hose the slime off, makes filleting so much easier. This also works well on any deep water fish. Also because the fish is whole the freshwater does not affect the quality of the fillets.

a bit of low foul is in order when targeting tarakihi, but at times even right up in the harbour the odd one can be caught...
shame really they used to be pretty abundant though out the gulf...
my last encounter was the bottom end of Waiheke...

Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing

Only tera's I've caught in the gulf were with Billy Ho on his Fyran he had 7 or so years back. We were a few k's inside little barrier. I was the only one catching them and Billy wanted one for dinner so scabbed one of my flasher rigs, sat beside me and pulled 2 in for his dinner.

Mate caught 1 on the 19m foul in middle of the firth a couple of years back which amazed me.

Caught a few in 40m off Kawau in recent years..  Have to target them though..  only a few miles from Kawau too.  As Leathal says... low foul..
Quite often when fishing with three people at once, the terikihi will only be caught on the lines targeting them ...  using terikihi flasher rigs.
We dont get a heap..  but maybe 2 or 3 a trip... to go with a mixed bag of snapper and the odd blue cod..
So they are there... J

4kg kahawai? a fish that size would smash the 1,2,3 and 8kg mens national records

Yeah I didn't weigh the Kahawai but they were massive like the ones off the west coast.
