Hi guys, looking for some advice on a first-timer salt water fly set up.
Ultimate goal is targeting snapper from the rocks, however, inevitably it'll come out in the work ups in the gulf also.
From what I've read 9 weight is a good starting point for learning to cast and fight fish?
So, looking for some thoughts or experiences on a good starting out setup - or better yet if someone is looking at trading up or selling some gear I would certainly consider that.
Cheers, Matt.

Have a read of this

And this one also

In brief get a Redington Predator 9wt setup with the Sage reel from Rod n Reel Newmarket. Posted to your door and start fishing. Simple.

PM muchalls or Fenien. Most recent guys to buy there setup from Rod N Reel, both appear happy with the gear and both catching fish.

Very good advice.Bought my Predator outfit on Millsys recommendation & have been stoked with it.Fully set up with backing & line ready to fish.Went for a 10wt with the goal of targeting kingis , is a bit of overkill on kawahai but still great fun. When finances allow I will be getting a 7wt outfit to match.

Thanks for the advice, I'll stick my head into R&R over the weekend and have a look.
Does anyone fish the northern side of the Manukau Harbour?

Hi Matt, yes I do fish it quite often mostly from Blockhouse Bay to Huia, I can't pretend being reliable at catching fish there but there's some good days; let me know if you wana have a cat when you're all set.

Just to add a bit to the debate: Fenien if I was getting a 7wt kit and already had a big one I'go for something that's a bit less of a powerhouse that the Predator; I've been doing everything with a 7wt TFO bvk for over a year&half now and totally love it!
I'm doing the opposed of you: looking now for the hefty part of the kit.

I'm no pro but my personal take for the full array on SWF would be a six, nine and twelve wt. which should cover virtually anything that the average SWF flinger will come accross. The 6 would even double for the odd bit of fresh water if you got that desparate.
Approach with extreme caution - I NEVER look where my back cast is going....

newbie question but can you swap the same reel between the different weight rods? even just to cover two?

Depends on what reel and line weights BMY, some reels have 2 spools so you can change the line over to match the rod weight or buy a spare spool.

I seem to remember you mentioning you watch this thread Dan.... Always wanted to try SWF, done a tiny bit of freshwater long long time ago and really liked but never done anything about trying it on the salty.
Be a bit tricky from the yak I think, where would you strip the line out onto before casting, onto the water?

You totally can, usually with the same reel you can cover 2-3 line classes (dont go too much higher than what it should be as you'll end up with not enough backing, I wouldn't spool with less than 100m of backing)
Just make sure you reel can handle the salt because no matter how much you rinse it you'll end up wrecking any die cast trout reel...

Kayak fly fishing is totally fine and great actually: I mostly fish for a kayak (classic one, not even sit on top) I strip the line on my legs indeed, if you dont carry a ton of junk with you (no need for fly fishing) the kayak acts as a perfect stripping basket.
The only thing I found tricky at the start was landing the fish: fly rods break very easily and I learnt the hard way that you'd better grab the leader rather than the fish if you stupidly don't have a net...

Final word is GIVE IT A GO!! Big smile

Predator with Sage2280 reel, from R&R for < $600 with backing and line last time someone asked.

The Airflow over Redington has been covered before.

2 threads to have a read of;

I have quite a bit of airflow gear, rods & lines. Nothing wrong with it, but it is priced wrongly in most places I have seen it available in NZ. The lines I have I ordered from the UK and were about 25% of the price I've seen them here. Good value at that price, poor value at NZ prices.

I like to use 12lbs leaders when the water is clear but when I feel like I could be stupid enough to cast at kings with my 7Wt I rig it with 20lbs... So far so good... someday I might be proved that 7wt and 20lbs are not meant to get along LOL

...just be aware when buying rods etc. with lifetime warranties that they normally only apply in the country they were bought. Meaning if you buy it overseas and you break it you'll have to send it back to where you bought it or direct to the manufacturer. Any savings made on the purchase will be eaten up pretty quickly.
The main purpose of tightening such schemes is of course to look after our local retailers and the customers who buy new gear in NZ. It's he only way if we are to make these products available to shops and customers in NZ. And to keep the shops alive. Which is pretty much equal to keeping the sport alive...
