Had a look at some fish today- one of those food markets that are everywhere. stale fruit & vege ,and fish. Had to fight my way into the fish dept through the smell.
Firstly would say at least 80% of all fish were really stale, food poison material, and most would be dumped. What else could they do.
Snapper all about 25-26 cm. Sunken eyes ,no colour ,dehydrated heads. Gurnard ,some big ,were the same. A pale slimy pink grey.
But then spied another tray of CLEARLY UNDERSIZE SNAPPER, They had been cunning enough to remove heads ,tails wings and stomach flaps. There is no doubt in my mind these were undersize snapper. They were tiny.
So here we are,we have to throw back 25 cm snapper dead or alive.(even 30 cm is a bit small for me). Yet these guys catch what you have released and even worse present them in a condition of advanced decay. What a disgusting waste of your and my heritage.
Something is very wrong. All fish ,kahawai, porae, black snapper, blue cod ,leather jacket, terakihi.trevelly, most grey mullet, ling frostfish etc were all well past it.
I find it hard to catch a Trevelly in the muddy these days, and i see this.!
Feel really pissed off at the waste of good n.z fish, our heritage, in places like this especially when we are told we catch too many. and threatened with cuts. What a lame joke.!
So headed off to a similar shop. Same thing. Snapper all 25-26 cm & stale, and they say they dont catch this size because there is no market. Whose trying to fool who.?
Would love to get these fish tested for bacterial count

How did you get as far as the fish department if the front of store smelt so bad? I would have done a u-turn at the doorDead< id="adlesse_unifier_magic_element_id" style="display:none;">
What's the cheapest type of meat? Dear balls. They're under a buck.

Because i wanted to check out the fish. Will talk to mpi,but wont take photos. Most whole fish were exactly 25cm imo ,with a few 26cm. It would be impossible for mpi to measure the undersize ones if they were minus heads and tails, even if the knew they were obviously undersize. Thats why they removed most of the fish before putting them on display. They would know the rules.

Yes 25 cm for comms. Its more the state of the fish.We hear about waste yet a lot of waste goes on ashore as well. The headed & tailed snaps, if whole fish,  were well under 25 ,in my estimation.

Most fish sold looks rather abused and past use by date.Good for the garden or pig food

How much flesh is on a 250mm snapper, must be 3 or 4 tablespoons ?at the rate you need 20 for a feed, boneless fillets,I reckon they would look like a joke ...Thumbs Down

Cirrus,
Don't bother contacting MPI, unless you have evidence of quota breaches.
The issue is of food safety.
Contact your local council and ask to speak with a TA, Territorial Authourity. They deal with retailers in regard to sale of food that is "Fit for purpose"
If the retailer has an approved Food Safety Programme, they can be managed though it.
They can also have their store rating reduced from A to B or worse.

Thanks for that tip Get in behind. All whole snapper in the 25-26 CM range. so quite legal. Except the tailed and headed fish were almost certainly smaller than 25 cm. But who could prove that if head and tail is missing. But what i find --well just depressing is to see fish in such a poor state. And this seems to be on the increase. I often look at these shops ,only to see what the are selling.Certainly not to buy.
I never buy fish except  the odd bit of hoki from N.W if it is in top condition. But the shops i mentioned seem to be on the increase.
So my thoughts are that these fish have not sold at the markets and are eventually bought at a cheaper price due to poor condition. And this leads to the question that if this is the case then perhaps too much fish is landed for the local market,or at least too many 25 cm snapper. And then comes the question . Waste of a valuable resource that we are all deprived of . How big is this waste.
A fishing mate when buying some mullet for bait a month or so back was told he could get as much as he wanted for burley from the waste bins. He took one look and found most fish in the bins were small 25-26 cm snapper. He politely said no thanks as snapper from what i understand is no good for snapper burley. Likewise he could have been nabbed for undersize as our limit size is 27 cm.
So one has to wonder whats going on and why would retailers buy fish like that if they knew some would be waste

The fish shop corner of gt south rd and cavendish drive, manukau, where the mad butcher use to be,the smell at door stopped me going in,but the shop at manukau city mall never smells of fish
all fish looks fresh and go out of their way if you have a request.when i want fresh jack mackeral, give them a couple of days notice and they ring when in store.

I to would be very curious. Have often looked at the fish in the supermarket out of interest and some stuff is just harendous the likes of kahwai and mullet I wouldn't even use as bait it looks that far gone. No wonder theas alot of people out there that say they dont like fish for the simple fact that the only fish they know of is the stinky crap.

I brought snapper fillets last nightEmbarrassed first time ever, no longer have a boat, it looked great thats why i brought it.
I noticed last night when the missus took it out of the bag it did have a smell to it, a smell im not used too  after catching my own fish for many years, had my reservations about it but keeped quiet untill it hit the plate, tasted great, firm fillets didn't fall apart or anything!!!

Mussels in the supermarket are doused with fresh water, not salt water.
Makes you think how fresh they are. They're wet, not fresh
