Author: Espresso
Subject: 12283
Posted: 03 Feb 2012 at 11:07am

Sure was a typical January alright what with snapper right Downtown feeding, yet out in the wide open gulf, lots of combatants lurking, but a cease fire is being adhered to most of the time. Still that doesn't stop Amatuer and I trying to start our own little battles out there - ever the optimists.

Metservice was 24hrs out with its forecast - so instead of flat calm fields of fire, we got the chop. Lumpy and bumpy sea and those oh-so-tentative bites that rarely result in a hookup, well testing our wits and presentation.

So many mackerel are around again (same as last year looking back). And since word on the street has it that the macks have been doing OK in terms of livebait - a few were brought aboard for some live firing. So while we worked the various baitfish imitations from the tiniest of Gulp grubs to the Catch Anchovy, along with metallica like the blue Jitterbug, it really seemed to come down to how we could slowly entice a strike with a tentative retrieve up from the sea floor. We threw down the entire gambit of weapons.

Tough fishing on the softies so a nervous mackerel or two were randomly volunteered and sent out on recon'. Neither were to make it back.

The first livie was all perked up and twitchy-as 40m below, but the predatory antagonist won a free feed. Another livie was given a good trim, doing the funky butterfly...this was enough to get a grunty fat kingie to succumb to temptation. Great fight on the spin gear

Gulf conditions below average to head out wider, so we headed in to try our luck out of the wind in the Motuhie. Alas the morning bite was over and with wind against tide it was time to head home with just a few pan-snapper.

Good to see my new GPS works well, the last one was killed in action and has been laid to rest along with all its secrets.

In close still the place to be!

Author: Espresso
Subject: 12283
Posted: 17 Nov 2011 at 9:28am

Cheers guys, yeah it's all good out there for sure!
Ah whale watching, Rick I reckon this aspect is a complete section in itself in the wonderful world of workups! Whales would take me a few chapters to get to grips with in terms of their activites and the massive influence on fishing they can have (both good and some not so good) just out here.
Yes I actively search for and try and choose a workup with a whale feeding in a defined area if possible
1. I turn all sounders and radios off before I get to a whale workup (ww) as whales feed using their eyesight and sound and I want to encourage not stop this, slowing down and stopping away from them up drift. Several boats zooming in and around, sounders on...the whale can leave straight away and even though most guys hookup, it's over soon and gawk around wondering why. One reason I prefer to be 'alone' with a whale - I've have been fishing with a whale for hours at times. Hopefully I'll get to literally whale ride this summer.
2. Gannets behave quite differently around a whale so I can sometimes spot that there is going to be a whale present from a long way away, sometimes even pick the right gannet body language as one flys by towards a distant whale
3. Whales use dolphins, and visa versa. Whales will hone in on dolphins feeding, dolphins bow-ride whales, its a mutual arrangement at times
4. Bigger snapper can hang with whales for quite some time, and will feed very close and up the water column much higher than normally.
5. I'll change colour and style of SP and rod/reel used when arriving at a ww

Just unloaded the smoker...oh the deliscious smells, nice big fat snapper from a ww... out night with a cold one I reckon
