Author: Espresso
Subject: 12283
Posted: 09 Sep 2010 at 6:22am

Crikey you're right Sinful, fishing - where it's at

Hey cheers for the heads-up delbnz, really looking forward to seeing the first issue of your online fishing magazine this month, what a great concept!!

...and with new product testing on the agenda a plan was hatched to head out with Amateur to test theories on Snapper, if possible. Well you could bet on it, Metservice predicting 15kt++ sou' easters, and it's variable, and the other way around for the last few of days. So with a fair bit of disappointment at 7pm the following mornings fishin' mission was abandoned

But come 0900 the wind had gone back to variable, the tide remained HUGE, and enough of a calm to zip out for a look, only Elvis quickly left the building..

The massive movement of water was immediately apparent at the ramp, heavy water swirls fair romping out! It was lumpy and although an attempt at heading NE of Tiri was made, after just 15 minutes I'd had enough spinal realignment and thought well if the fish aren't here, no matter I'll just drift anyway. So that's what I did, just drifted No fish biting, I tried all sorts (not licorice) but couldn't bring a fish aboard. After 3 hours and no fish gracing the deck it was starting to look like no fresh fish for dinner at all...oh dear bad luck (or something like that).

A slow surf back to northern Tiri channel was the ticket, and this ticket included free passes to Snapper, lots of them, biting well, fighting well, and all was well, very well

The first hint came with a couple of nice pannies on the Glowing Torpedo and Blue Anchovy on 2lb line, 5lb Fluro..I'd gone into ultra stealth mode because time was running out as return time loomed, needed fish..
Then finally I got right into some good string pullers, they were stationed under a small Pillie (I think) baitschool and very keen on the Screaming Pilchard, amazingly so. Time to crank up the line weight to 4lb with the 3oz Jolly Roger and we're away!! Yeeehhaaaaaaaaa.

The next two hours were just what the winter doctor ordered, fish! A nice tightly grouped bunch of Snapper, a good drift line over them, and by now the wind and sea had just ______________
flat lined. The noise from the sea swells crashing the rocks onto Wooded Island Tiri were clearly audible along with gulls and the whole scene unfolded like a pop-out fairy tale book. The sun peeked through, sea so smooth the drogues just flopped, the fish flowed and the bin became laden.

A few fatties to smoke and a few freshies to fillet, this one might've had a hook in the eye a while back as a young'n, blind as a bat rightside, but grew up into a fine fat table fish, excellent.

What a thrill and so totally enjoyable, just there, north of Tiri, like being in the back yard. The fish were just starting to show Spring signs, maybe. Nice pannies in their early 50's were welcomed aboard

All fish well conditoned, what a day to break the winter doldrums.

Cheers, hopefully some more fine days soon to go out and get some?

Sunshine and a nice view for a few quiet hours of contemplation, fishing was down on the pecking order, more ambience seeking if ya know wha' I mean. This spot fit the bill.

Very picturesque with calm waters 'n all, so down went some burley, the Salmon burley working particularly nicely, but the huge tide overcame what little wind there was in the bay and so not quite all lined up, but hey, the things ya have to put up with. Piper came quickly for a look, didn't stay long. Some Mackerel arrived I think, but they too only briefly so it was time to see what some basic straylining with the lightly braided setups was like in the sunshine for a while.

A few Ky charged through now and then, hilarious on the 2lb off the front of the boat and around and around Great fun and the little reel screemed! A nice fish of some description took to me to the wall - time to bring out the muscles, the big 4lb setup.

And so each cast was met with amusing takes by small Snapper with straylined Pillies and small Squid. Between that and the burley, those fish should be well fed and growing big!! Very hard case feeling each tiny tap on the braid, the first or second runs on the light cotton, hookup

One couldn't expect anything other than Rangi specials in this spot, and although a bag limit of over 27cm Snapper was easily achieved, keeping them just wasn't on the agenda, just fun time and doing something different.

Size wasn't everything, and these little fighter pilots (aprx. 30cm) gave an excellent account of themselves, great to watch their runs in the clear water with their blue colours glinting. Hard to film and fish standing up off the front of the boat though

As to be expected from the habitat, no size prizes, just a great day

Much mental inspiration was provided by the surroundings and fiesty little fish, allowing the tumult of thoughts re: e-mags, online information, real time video capabilities, instant info sharing, small game/big game, tackle developments..what a jigsaw to piece together, without the end picture...interesting times, I wonder what or who will be inspired.

The water temp is still hovering around 14c, i.e it's not rising, it is only the start of August after all. But with the amount of baitfish around the Gulf both out wide and in close I would expect this summer to be an amazing one. I would also expect the returning Spring influx to be nice and early this year with well conditioned fish.

Anchorite environs looked quiet, apart from a Whale which was just great to see. But again he was just milling around puffin' away, smoko time here too.

Tons of baitfish all over the show which bodes well for summer fishing.

Bottom fish sign all over the place as well, low lying clumps of fish, but signs of what? Snapper, Dory...??

Whatever it was they were having a siesta more than just a cup of tea, so smoko time for me while trying to think why and where (if) it was going to go off. Everything seemed poised for an explosion.
Thought a bite might have started when this nice pannie tugged the 2lb line for a while after snaffling the slowly retreived little Blue Anchovy and joined me for a cuppa.

But no, quiet in the Gulf. A squirt east over near the no-fishing zone following a few lonesome Gannets seemed at least something to do.

And as a Gurnard came to play, Wilson arrived and the place seemed to breathe into life a little.

Wilson on shortly after..

But dropped right under the boat...a nice Snapper in double poundages, buga.

I did the same. A handful of nice pannie sized Snapper chilled out in my salt slurry, the wind just started to perk a little from the north, so time to blat back in tandem to the local raft up (wonder how it's going out at the big Barrier bash this weekend?) for some important discussion and consumption with the warp just hanging in the water. Absolute calm and the worlds issues faded.

Miller Time!

Author: Espresso
Subject: 12283
Posted: 01 Aug 2010 at 9:02am

Cheers OFF THE HOOK, Predator07 (must've been the connection?), Roughy and Plow, and I see a couple of reports of some good fish from Mahiman and TL2... at one stage I wasn't far from both of you ..

That full moon was playing it's game so a predawn caffienisation was a happening thing, which meant after a nice gradual engine warmup through prescribed the 5kt zone, although even with another couple of coffee's I was still greeted by Coastguard with "you are barely readable but understood"...hmmm the VHF must need checking, the brain was definitely in gear, well by that stage anyway . Electrics and water ay, add that to the maintanence list. So heading out over the same track as the other day, the conspicuous absence of baitfish was intriguing. Within such a short space of time the Mackerel clouding the sounder had varnished (Percy). But the sunrise looking like it was eminating from the Tiri lighthouse looked inviting as sunrises always seem to.

Onwards to find the food source for the fish was the approach today, especially after watching some out of this world footage on Animal Planet about the world currents, plankton, baby Tuna etc...absolutely incredible filming. So all sparked up to follow the general rules...I found lots of baitfish again several miles further east of Tiri this time, hinted at by Penguins. Unfortunately this meant travelling into the fog. The wind had increased to about 10kts up the Firth to. It got cold & damp and a bit of a downer compared to the blissfully sunny day I had left behind at Tiri. The bite hadn't yet started with the Snapper on the sounder underneath the baitschools, no doubt it would later. Very tentative takes, and me dropping a few fish, one or two in the bin..nah I'm frozen, so a call to a mate who was out north of Tiri basking in sunshine...I'm off! The bait and Snapper sign was minimal further out but the conditions were smooth, sunny and just what the human doctor ordered. So a pie and a chat later, slow fishing but very very pleasant.

The Dolphins put on their own live Discovery channel display, so blatant in their actions that I reeled in my line and stayed with them a while. The big group finally formed and milled around swapping ideas and instructions, then gradually headed off after the leader gave the water slapping signal, very gradually they puffed away, not in hunting mode, then after a while we all stopped and just caught up with eachother for another congregation - a few young ones had had enough of this carry on and put on an aerial display rivalling WaterWorld, then they did their speed test. 5 or 6 of the little Dolphins chased eachother at full fins, incredible with the glassy water to watch them chase eachother as fast as they could flying metres through the air like bullets, so much like kids running and playing chase. The older members came over and the chatter under the boat was the loudest I had heard, the boat completely motionless and their comm's coming through loud and clear (non feeding mode for sure). So we just played around for while, the Surtees plowing along providing max. wake just for fun

I had managed to spend much of my time not catching fish in a way, but the day was superb otherwise.

Very interesting putting a few signals together from the wildlife and learning more about the cycle out there. I took home just a fish along with a huge amount of satisfaction, as I went and picked up my own young one from his playground antics.

Sunshine
