Just recently I decided there must be a better way of transporting rods on each fishing expedition. You can bung them in the boat in the side pockets, however then tend to get a bit bashed about unless they’re carefully packed and ideally in rod bags so while a good option, not ideal. Also they’re not particularly secure if you leave the car/boat unattended for any reason.
Putting them in the car or SUV is another option but again not ideal as they’re always in the way or about to poke an eye out of some unsuspecting passenger, you know the story…

I was seriously considering a DIY option for the roofrack when I happened to be talking to the team at Sportfishing NZ. Greg Head suggested I try one of their products – the Rod-Loft Pro. The Rod-Loft Pro is a couple of simple extendable bars that appear as though they’d fit just about any car (there’s 6 fittings for a variety of mounting options with the set).

There’s a range of combinations of the fittings and the beauty of that is that you can really customise the set to best suit your own requirements. I chopped a few bits here and there to make it easy and quick to get the rods in and out of my car and keep them well above head height. It’s not a bad idea to experiment a bit before you make any permanent changes to the parts however.

About 20 minutes to fit it and problem solved. Rods are now permanently carried in the car and they’re up and out of the way. Only problem I’ve had was the tips rattling on the light above the dashboard but a couple of small pieces of foam that can be added or removed in a moment sorted that out.

If you’re looking for a safe, secure option for transporting rods then the Rod-Loft Pro is definitely worth a look.
