New Zealand Trophy Waters – Three Days Fishing in the South Island makes wonderful viewing. It’s not a big production number and it doesn’t try to be a ‘how to or a ‘where’ type of video. Rather it chronicles three days of phenomenal brown trout fishing in the South Island high country in two different rivers (hardly more than streams really) involving four anglers.

The scenery is breathtaking, but it’s the fish that really had me grasping for air. In the course of the videos eighty minutes, we see maybe half a dozen trophy browns (10-pound-plus) caught and released on nymphs and dry flies, as well as several fish nearly as big. It’s quite phenomenal.

These fish are the result of two seasons of mouse plagues and it’s possible that it may be many years before we see their like again, but if ever you needed motivation to head south and check out some wilderness fly fishing, New Zealand Trophy Trout Waters supplies it.

Producer (Cameraman, Director and Editor) Bruce Mason has compiled the video from three episodes of his fly fishing series Back Country Fly Fishing, which plays on satellite television in New Zealand and Australia. Production values are high, the camera work is superb and the featured anglers, while low key – almost reverent (no Americans here!) – are so obviously stoked with their respective catches, that the viewer can’t help but be caught up in the scene.

New Zealand Trophy Waters can be purchased from Bruce Mason’s website: www.fishingvideo.co.nz at a cost of $30 plus postage. Postage costs $5.50 withing New Zealand. Bruce can also be contacted by email: bruce.masson@xtra.co.nz
